Non-Point Source Pollution Program

Water quality problems are common in North Carolina's surface waters and groundwater. North Carolinians often hear about algae thriving in estuaries and rivers, fish kills and excess nutrients in our rivers. Water quality problems in North Carolina originate from numerous sources, both point and non-point.

Point sources include pipes and tiles discharging to streams. Non-point sources of pollution in the waters of the state are diffuse sources such as pesticides or nutrients that reach surface waters via runoff and groundwater seepage after their application in farm fields or sediments from construction sites that end up in rivers and lakes.
