West Nile Virus  - Bird Reporting Form

The Public Health Pest Management (PHPM) section of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources is aggressively monitoring for the presence of West Nile Virus throughout North Carolina.  In addition to contributing to a nationwide CDC database, suitable carcasses are being forwarded to appropriate laboratory facilities for  testing. 

We appreciate your efforts in assisting this surveillance and monitoring effort. Please fill out the form below to report any ill or dead wild birds found in North Carolina ONLY.

Only carcasses that meet the following criteria will be accepted for testing:

  • Crows, Blue Jays, Cardinals and Raptors (hawks, eagles, owls, etc.) ONLY!
  • Found in North Carolina
  • Less than 36 hours old
  • No odor or maggots
  • Entire carcass only

If the bird meets testing criteria, please contact your local health department or animal control office for instructions on pick-up or delivery of the carcass. For assistance in locating someone to pick-up the bird, please call our main office at (919)733-6407.
